Porcupine Lake

“Incredibly deep and natural performances.”

That quote about Porcupine Lake is from filmmaker Jane Anderson, the Emmy Award winner for Olive Kitteridge, and signals the value of movies by writer, producer, and director Ingrid Veninger in understanding the human condition.

This is a complex coming-of-age film dealing with girlhood, first loves and the issues facing today’s young people as they enter adulthood. With the backdrop of a lazy, hazy summer vacation in Northern Ontario, we see the variety of relationships- and their implications- for young Bea. Dealing with the implications of her parent’s difficult relationship as well as the new friendships which blossom, we see the challenges of independence and the passing of childhood.

Beatriz at Dinner

What a dinner party!

Beatriz at Dinner

If you were ever inclined to play the game of being able to invite anyone you wanted (dead or alive) to dinner, these folks would be sure to provide some very lively banter. In fact, the whole premise of this movie is based on being around this “Trump-era” dinner party table and listening in on the conversation  of some decidedly interesting, and opinionated people. Salma Hayek plays Beatriz, a quiet, controlled ‘earth mother’-type, while John Lithgow is a decidedly less circumspect and very rich, developer. They provide character studies of opposite views with simmering tension and intense truth. This is a film which should not only be seen, but discussed and debated.

This year for the ninth annual Spinning Reels Bursary, we are happy to announce that we gave two awards of $1,000 to two local students.

The proud recipients of Spinning Reels bursary are John Kahn and Jesse Ricottone

John attended BMLSS and actively participated in making short films and music videos. He will attend Ryerson University to become a Film Editor. He was pleased and thankful as he said, “Thanks to Spinning Reels I will be able to buy equipment for school to make the videos I love”.

Jesse attends St. Dominic and states that he has been running Live video broadcasts throughout the school for over a year.

Jesse says, “It’s amazing that we have boards like Spinning Reels who support the arts and students like me to attend university and to offer the support available for students to give back to the community”.

He also has been involved in making short films and videos. He wants to attend school for Cinematography and wants to make films and videos that are creative and make people laugh.

Maudie

The Artist MUST Create

Maudie is the story of Maud Dowley, a Nova Scotian constrained both physically and emotionally by juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and a well-meaning yet overprotective family. Despite the family’s lack of faith in Maud, she strikes out on her own to both assert her independence and pursue her artistic vision. As a result, she agrees to be live-in housekeeper for a recluse. Showing her characteristic persistence, she cracks his reserve as well as the world of art. This is an inspirational true story of a young woman whose artistic view of life allowed her to overcome just about anything that was thrown at her.

Their Finest

It was the ‘Unknown’ War

Sam Claflin and Gemma Arterton in ‘Their Finest’

If it’s true that the first casualty of war is truth, then there’s bound to be a LOT of manipulation of ‘Alternate Facts’ on both sides of the conflict. Their Finest is an interesting take on the British efforts to pump up the war effort and instil pride in the masses all while bombs were raining down on London. It’s an interesting twist with savvy, sassy heroine Catrin (think Kate Hepburn or Jean Arthur)  dealing with men standing in the way of her ambition, whilst the war’s body count mounts. Backed by an outstanding cast of scene stealing Brits like Bill Nighy (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) and Jeremy Irons (The Borgias), the charm oozes out of this romantic cross between a comedy and drama. In addition, the issue of propaganda certainly acts as a mirror to our own political world and underscores the immediacy of this film.

A Man Called Ove

If you liked the book (and even if you didn’t) you’ll love the movie!

Hollywood lately seems to be fascinated with aging and its effects on people as the number of ‘senior-targeted’ films has increased over the years. Back in the day, On Golden Pond was a rarity, but perhaps now that the baby boomers are facing the second half of their lives, the turn to aging has spawned a plethora of possibilities: Remember with Christopher Plummer, Elsa and Fred (Christopher Plummer and Shirley MacLean), The Lady in the Van (Maggie Smith), Philomena ((Judi Dench), and on and on. In every case, in order for the audience to care, it is important that the movie be honest and real, not treacly or manipulative, and that credibility is certainly the case with A Man Called Ove.  In some ways, Ove is a stereotype: his reliance on rules tells people they can’t drive here or there, he’s very much fixed in his daily routines (who isn’t?!), and his interactions with others are a reminder of Mr. Wilson from the Dennis the Menace cartoons. But the audience is let in on his life through both flashbacks and modern time episodes so that we get to understand and develop a strong feeling about this heartwarming man and his situation.  It was likely the acting of Rolf Lassgård and the ensemble cast that generated the nomination for an Oscar for Best Foreign film, but by the time you leave the theatre, you’ll likely be happy you got to know them.

Burn Your Maps

Can you run away to find yourself?

When we first meet Wes (the delightful Jacob Tremblay from Roomhe has become strangely obsessed with all things Mongolian. Now, many youngsters are ‘taken’ by their interests: dinosaurs, a hockey hero, a secret friend, but Mongolia? There’s obviously more going on here in Burn Your Maps, and when we meet his parents and start to understand the backstory we get a clearer picture of a possible cause of Wes’ passion. But how to resolve it,  all the while helping the family to heal, is what this quirky, well-acted movie is all about.

Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner

Voted the best Canadian Film EVER!

Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner, the multi-award winning movie as well as the first film shot in Inuktitut, is a turn on the traditional story of a small group of Inuit who have a romantic problem- an age-old vehicle for examining human interaction. As could be anticipated, the importance of getting along and supporting each other is incredibly important in an environment as difficult and unforgiving as the Arctic. When it was released in 2001, Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner was both a critical and box-office success, unlike anything which had come before- especially Nanook of the North.

I, Daniel Blake

Sometimes the state just does some things wrong- and who pays the cost?

I, Daniel Blake is an examination of the effect bureaucracy can have on people, and who better to do that than Ken Loach (The Angels Share, Jimmy’s Hall). In winning this year’s Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, we are presented with a drama of an ailing handyman’s battle to survive after being denied his government health benefits. Most of us at one time or another have come in contact with the faceless, remorseless ‘wall’ that is bureaucracy, and in I, Daniel Blake, Loach reveals it in all its uncaring, dehumanizing apathy. This is a tale of people with excellent acting that will leave no one unmoved.
