A Man Called Ove

If you liked the book (and even if you didn’t) you’ll love the movie!

Hollywood lately seems to be fascinated with aging and its effects on people as the number of ‘senior-targeted’ films has increased over the years. Back in the day, On Golden Pond was a rarity, but perhaps now that the baby boomers are facing the second half of their lives, the turn to aging has spawned a plethora of possibilities: Remember with Christopher Plummer, Elsa and Fred (Christopher Plummer and Shirley MacLean), The Lady in the Van (Maggie Smith), Philomena ((Judi Dench), and on and on. In every case, in order for the audience to care, it is important that the movie be honest and real, not treacly or manipulative, and that credibility is certainly the case with A Man Called Ove.  In some ways, Ove is a stereotype: his reliance on rules tells people they can’t drive here or there, he’s very much fixed in his daily routines (who isn’t?!), and his interactions with others are a reminder of Mr. Wilson from the Dennis the Menace cartoons. But the audience is let in on his life through both flashbacks and modern time episodes so that we get to understand and develop a strong feeling about this heartwarming man and his situation.  It was likely the acting of Rolf Lassgård and the ensemble cast that generated the nomination for an Oscar for Best Foreign film, but by the time you leave the theatre, you’ll likely be happy you got to know them.
