The Angels’ Share–May 13, 2013

Gary Maitland, William Ruane and Paul Brannigan in The Angels' Share.

Gary Maitland, William Ruane and Paul Brannigan in The Angels’ Share. Click image to visit this movie’s IMDB page for trailers and more.

Winner of the Jury Prize at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, The Angels’ Share is the latest collaboration between director Ken Loach (The Wind that Shakes the Barley, My Name Is Joe) and screenwriter Paul Laverty marks a sharp left turn from the pair’s impassioned, socially conscious examinations of the British underclass.

When we are first introduced to the protagonist of The Angels’ Share — Robbie (newcomer Paul Brannigan), a young, intermittently employed Glaswegian with a propensity for violence — he seems little different from the duo’s other rough-hewn working-class characters, but as his story unfolds it takes a decided, and refreshing, turn for the comic.

Determined to straighten out his life and settle down with his pregnant girlfriend (Siobhan Reilly), Robbie narrowly manages to avoid more jail time by agreeing to community service. He is soon befriended by his avuncular supervisor Harry (John Henshaw), a kindly soul who has a connoisseur’s passion for whisky. When Harry takes Robbie and his fellow young offenders Mo (Jasmin Riggins), Rhino (William Ruane) and Albert (Gary Maitland) on an outing to a distillery in the Highlands, Robbie discovers that he has a natural nose for whisky.

Amour — April 22, 2013

Emmanuelle Riva stars in Amour

Emmanuelle Riva stars in Amour. Click image to visit this movie’s IMDB page.

Settled happily into their long-established domestic routines, retired music teachers Anne and Georges Laurent (renowned French thesps Emmanuelle Riva and Jean-Louis Trintignant) have their comfortable world cataclysmically upended when Anne suddenly displays symptoms of a stroke.

With Anne now partially paralyzed, Georges struggles to care for her at home, with each day bringing new, painful challenges. It would have been easy with material such as this to slip into the conventions of a tearjerker, but Haneke unerringly steers clear of sentimentality, cliché or bathos.

Hyde Park on Hudson — April 8, 2013

Laura Linnie and Bill Murray in Hyde Park on Hudson

Laura Linney and Bill Murray star in Hyde Park on Hudson. Click image to visit this movie’s IMDB page for reviews, trailers and more.

Roger Michell’s Hyde Park on Hudson details the historic pre-war weekend in 1939 when England’s King George VI (last seen portrayed by Colin Firth in The King’s Speech) and Queen Consort Elizabeth came calling on U.S. president Franklin Delano Roosevelt at his upstate New York manor house — and when the president started to become especially close to his distant cousin Margaret “Daisy” Suckley.

The blossoming love between Daisy (Laura Linney, Love Actually) and FDR (a terrific turn by Bill Murray, Get Low) emerges in meaningful silences, the proud display of a stamp collection, a tryst in a car. Affinity becomes affection becomes an affair, while the chaos brewing on the European continent seems far, far away.

A Royal Affair – March 25, 2013

Handsome doctor and neglected queen.

A Royal Affair. Click image to view this movie’s IMDB page.

In the late eighteenth century, Denmark is ruled by the spoiled King Christian VII (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard), for whom governing takes a backseat to playing with his dog and indulging in all the pleasures of the flesh — which makes him susceptible to the designs of cunning courtiers.

Enter Johann Struensee (Mikkelsen), a handsome German doctor and proponent of the Enlightenment’s reformist principles, invited to come to Copenhagen as his personal physician. There, Struensee discovers his political match in the king’s captivating queen, CarolineMathilde (Alicia Vikander, Anna Karenina), who happens to be somewhat starved for attention.

Quartet – Monday March 11, 2013

Tom Courtenay and Maggie Smith star in Quartet.

Quartet’s star-studded cast includes Tom Courtenay and Maggie Smith. Click on this image to visit the movie’s IMDB page with trailers, review and more.

A directoral debut from none other than Dustin Hoffman (Rain Man, Kramer vs. Kramer), Quartet tells the story of retired opera singers and lifelong chums Wilf and Reggie (Billy Connolly, Fido and Tom Courtenay, Nicholas Nickleby), who, together with their former colleague Cissy (Pauline Collins, Albert Nobbs), reside in Beecham House, a retirement home for aged musicians.

Each year on Giuseppe Verdi’s birthday, the residents arrange a concert to raise funds for their home. It is usually a smooth-running, perfectly pleasant event.

Enter stage right Jean (Maggie Smith, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Ladies in Lavender), Reggie’s ex and the fourth, most famous member of the former quartet. Having recently fallen on hard times, the aged diva checks into Beecham, and it’s not long before long-buried grievances rise to the surface, rivalries resume, and plans begin to fall apart. Reconciliation is not on the program, but the show must go on — right?

Rebelle (War Witch)

The harrowing tale of a child soldier in Sub-Saharan Africa. Click on the image to visit this movie’s IMDB page for trailers, reviews and more.

Nominated for an Oscar for best foreign film, Rebelle is the harrowing story of a child soldier’s struggle for survival, conceived by Canadian writer and director Kim Nguyen.

Komona (Rachel Mwanza), a girl living in war-torn Sub-Saharan Africa, tells the blood-stained story of her life to the baby in her womb, a child conceived out of hate — a child she prays she can love.

Two years earlier, Komona’s village is invaded by rebels who force her to gun down her own parents before abducting her and sending her into guerilla warfare. When she is haunted by premonitory visions, she is dubbed “War Witch,” a role that brings with it both relative privileges and grave danger.

The Sessuibs stars Helen Hunt, John Hawkes and William H. Macey. Click on image to visit this movie’s IMDB page for reviews, trailers and more.

The Sessions is a based-on-reality comedy-drama about a childhood polio survivor (John Hawkes, Winter’s Bone), now in his thirties and permanently confined to an iron lung, who hires a professional sex surrogate (Helen Hunt) to help him lose his virginity.

Mark O’Brien’s severe physical limitations have not prevented him from becoming a poet and journalist, nor have they kept him from longing for one of life’s most treasured experiences: sexual fulfillment. With the tacit approval of his priest (William H. Macey), he sets out on a journey to satisfy this need.

An authentic and unlikely feel-good movie, The Sessions reminds us what can be achieved when we strive to overcome our preconceptions.
