The Sessions is a based-on-reality comedy-drama about a childhood polio survivor (John Hawkes, Winter’s Bone), now in his thirties and permanently confined to an iron lung, who hires a professional sex surrogate (Helen Hunt) to help him lose his virginity.
Mark O’Brien’s severe physical limitations have not prevented him from becoming a poet and journalist, nor have they kept him from longing for one of life’s most treasured experiences: sexual fulfillment. With the tacit approval of his priest (William H. Macey), he sets out on a journey to satisfy this need.
An authentic and unlikely feel-good movie, The Sessions reminds us what can be achieved when we strive to overcome our preconceptions.
