Watermark- January 13, 2014

Water, water everywhere?

Burtynsky-shot Watermark

From the Canadian documentary Watermark

Find out on Monday, January 13th at 7PM, what we’re doing to an essential element in our lives in Watermark

Multiple award-winning filmmaker Jennifer Baichwal and renowned photographer Edward Burtynsky have produced a beautiful documentary. While avoiding reams of statistics, it shows unerringly, and with great beauty and sensitivity the way in which humans are inextricably altering our planet’s most precious resource- water.

Water makes up such a large part of who and what we are, it is no wonder we are drawn to it, and these two artists capture our fascination, utilization, manipulation and destruction of water irrespective of culture or nationality. From the beaches for surfing, to the Ganges sacred bathing; from massive seafood farms to huge dams, the stunning visual landscape draws us in and encourages us in our efforts to consider both our needs and our effect.

The Hunt–December 9, 2013

Mads Mikkelsen The Hunt 250 In The Hunt, Director Thomas Vinterberg has created a masterful Danish film in which the lead, Mads Mikkelsen (A Royal Affair, Casino RoyaleHannibal) won Best Actor Award at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.  He portrays a nursery school teacher living in a small Danish village who is wrongfully accused of sexually assaulting a child.  The tension builds as the intricate plot reveals conflicting evidence in the case.  We witness the unraveling of a life affected by the community’s harsh reaction to the story. An additional interesting aspect is the struggle Lucas (MIkkelsen) has in order to maintain his romantic relationship with his co-worker, Nadia throughout his ordeal. The Hunt will have you glued to the edge of your seat awaiting the outcome of these dramatic events. The film was selected as the Danish entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards.

Chasing Ice-November 7, 2013

Chasing Ice 250

Chasing Ice documents glacial destruction due to global warming. For more on the movie, click anywhere on the photo.

In this powerful documentary, Director Jeff Orlowski’s masterful cinematography commands our attention to a crisis which is advancing at an exponential pace. Using snow-buried cameras, National Geographic photographer James Balog has captured stunning time-lapse images in the glacier-fields of Iceland and Greenland. Three years of photographic images have gone into the making of this film. We marvel at the unparalled beauty in the ice-scapes and at the same time are horrified by the record-breaking speed of the destruction. Balog describes these glaciers as being as individual in appearance as human faces. One piece of crumbling ice is said to be the size of lower Manhattan. While using a gently persuasive approach, Chasing Ice nevertheless undisputedly defies the skeptics of global warming and will leave you determined for change.

Before Midnight-October 21, 2013

The Romance continues with Before Midnight

Before Midnight 250

Before Midnight stars Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. For more on this movie, click anywhere on the photo

In Before Midnight, one of modern moviedom’s longest running screen romances (previously, 1995’s Before Sunrise and 2004’s Before Sunset ) sees director Richard Linklater once again unite Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Céline (Julie Delpy) in an up-close and personal view of their lives and relationship.

We join them on their vacation in Greece where their partnership, judging from their conversation, is one of contented middle age. Here they reminisce about their past both apart and together and recognize the effects time and responsibilities have had on each other and their relationship.

Hawke and Delpy turn in natural, intelligent and very real performances, in a well-paced, complex building on their time together. Their characters examine how life has changed for them, and by extension all of us as we have moved from our twenties on to middle age.

Nipissing A&C FilmAdaptation is all around us. It’s part of our world, it’s how we live, and who we are. And very often, it’s what we watch. From its inception as a technology and an art form in the 1890s, film is steeped in the adaptive process, telling and re-telling beloved, popular or fascinating narratives. Our series this year looks at how different films have adapted a whole range of narratives: a non-fiction book, a horror novel, children’s book, a raconteur’s anecdotes, a scandalous novel, a gothic novel, and a famously inadaptable novel. Unfinished Song- October 7, 2013

Unfinished Song

Unfinished Song

Vanessa Redgrave and Terence Stamp starring in Unfinished Song. For more info about this movie, click anywhere on the picture.

Featuring exceptional performances by Terence Stamp (Billy Budd, The Adventures of Pricilla, Queen of the Desert) and Academy Award winner Vanessa Redgrave (Julia, Howard’s End), Unfinished Song is a delightful movie that will lift your spirits.

Stamp plays Arthur, a curmudgeonly grump who sees little reason for changing anything about his life, especially at his age. Meanwhile, unwilling to let anything get her down, Marion (Redgrave) particularly loves her time with the local choir. A serious turn in her health causes Arthur to re-evaluate his previous notions of life, love and relationships- including the choir.

Redgrave and Stamp ensure that this love story, which could easily spiral into syrupy-sweet banality, rises above the mundane and predicable to inspire all to realize that both love and music touch the soul.

20 Feet from Stardom–September 23, 2013

20 Feet 280

20 Feet from Stardom. To see IMDB entry of this movie, click anywhere on the picture.

Monday, September 23 at 7PM will be the day the music LIVED!

Elvis had The Jordanaires, Gladys had Her Pips, and even Springsteen has the E Street band, but did you ever wonder about all those back-up singers, and how they felt ‘filling in the gaps’?

20 Feet from Stardom highlights some of the best background singers you’ve never heard of demonstrating their talent, intuition, and struggles to find careers as solo artists.

Award-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville shines a rare spotlight on some of the singers behind legends like the Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson and producer, Phil Spector. This triumphant and heartbreaking tribute to the unsung voices that changed the sound of popular music, shows their conflicts, sacrifices and rewards as they stood next to the spotlight.

Spinning Reels 2013 Bursary Winner Announced

SR 2013 Bursary Winner

It’s good news for local student Tori Wines, as she is the proud recipient of Spinning Reels fourth annual bursary.

Tori attended BMLSS and actively participated there, she was Deputy Prime Minister for Student Parliament. She is a member of the school’s gold-medal winning Canadian Improv team for three years. She has also been involved with Shakespeare in the Park, and has been working with over 200 young people in the local community in production and acting roles. She is attending York University undertaking a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, a new program that only accepts thirty people each year.

“It’s amazing that we have boards like Spinning Reels who support the arts and students like me to attend university and to offer the support available for students like me to give back to the community . It is so important and there are not that many in our area that cater specifically to artistic production. I can’t tell you how much this money will help for the year ahead and I hope you will continue to support other young artists as they are starting out as well” Tori said.

Tori will be spending the $1,000 on her course and books.

The criteria for the award state candidates must be students in their final year of study, who will be seeking admission into first-year undergraduate studies at a university or college in one of the following disciplines: Film Studies, Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences, Animation Arts Programs, Film and Television Production, Theatre Arts– Production or Performance, Digital Media Arts.

The board of Spinning Reels is happy to contribute this bursary to the education of local students knowing it will make a difference.

Spinning Reels is a local not for profit group of volunteers bringing independent movies to Muskoka. They are affiliated with the Film Circuit, a division of the Toronto International Film Festival Group, providing filmgoers in under-served communities transformative experiences through access to Canadian and International film.

Sandy Yudin who has been on the board for ten years and is part of the sub group for bursaries said, “It is nice to be able to help someone with their education and hopefully end up with Tori bring her films to Bracebridge for us all to see one day”.

An Oscar may make its way to Bracebridge one of these years.
