Feeling Fat?

It’s probably NOT your fault and Sugar Coated will show you why

Sugar Coated

As we see on an almost daily basis, we, our children and grandchildren are getting heavier and heavier. The rates of obesity and diabetes are unprecedented. Is it because of our lack of activity? Too much sedentary ‘screen’ time? Have we gorged on too much processed food for our own good? Maybe. Or perhaps there’s a more pervasive, all-encompassing reason that we have almost no control over- sugar. Join us as we examine the story of one industry’s efforts to push its product on us, and the possible devastating effects it may be having.

Remember

Can you Remember?

Master filmmaker Atom Egoyan (The Captive, The Sweet Hereafter) tackles one of the darkest chapters of 20th-century history in the gripping thriller Remember, which gives legendary actor Christopher Plummer (Elsa & Fred, The Sound of Music) a majestic role as an elderly Holocaust survivor seeking revenge on the man responsible for the deaths of his family.

Plummer plays Zev, a recent widower whose deteriorating mental state forces him to be placed under permanent care. When he discovers that the concentration- camp guard who murdered his relatives is now living in America under an assumed identity, Zev resolves to fulfill his final vow to his wife by exacting vengeance on the escaped war criminal- but his quest for retribution leads to unexpected results.

Learning to Drive

Life is just like Learning to Drive

Sir Ben Kingsley in 2014 Learning to Drive

Sir Ben Kingsley and Patricia Clarkson star in Learning to Drive

When Wendy’s husband, Ted decides he’s had enough of her and unceremoniously ‘dumps’ her and their marriage while in the back of a taxi, the road to her new life and independence is anything but assured. Fortunately, the same taxi driver who witnessed the break-up is able to assist Wendy, a fairly high-powered, narcissistic, A-type with one of life’s skills which she has not yet mastered. He’s a driving instructor, and he teaches her how to drive in New York- among many other things. As with all teaching situations, the learning is not a one-way street, and that’s where things get very interesting.

Muskoka Arts and Crafts

MAC LOGO.

Muskoka Arts & Crafts is the true heart of visual arts in the province’s favourite vacation area. One of Ontario’s oldest and most well established arts organizations, MAC has grown since its inception in 1963 to include nearly 400 artists and arts supporters, and has become an innovative force in the community at large. For artists, it is one of the benefits of living in Muskoka, a source of support through like-minded people that fosters creative growth and a feeling of community. In turn, the promotion of the arts has made Muskoka a vibrant and culturally engaged destination for visitors, local residents and summer residents alike. Muskoka Arts & Crafts is a non-profit organization that is financially self-supporting.

Its annual Christmas, Spring Members’ and Who Art Thou events feature the work of its many members, and the Chapel Gallery in Bracebridge, Muskoka Arts & Crafts’ home, hosts an ongoing cycle of juried exhibitions by local and visiting artists. The Summer Show, a feature in the community for 47 years, attracts hundreds of artists from across the country, and is visited each year by over 20,000 people. In April of 2008, an initiative launched by Muskoka Arts & Crafts culminated in the Muskoka District Council declaring the District Municipality of Muskoka as a Designated Arts Community, a testament to the vitality of the area’s arts scene and its potential as a fundamental building block for year-round art tourism in Muskoka. MAC also produce the annual Muskoka Arts & Crafts’ Guidebook, a beautiful full colour publication that will be the definitive guide to visual arts in the area.

Suite Française

What Would YOU Do?

In an intelligent, careful adaptation of the writings of Auschwitz victim Irène Némirovsky, Suite Française examines the human response, on an individual level, to occupation.

A small northern French town is thrown into panic with the arrival of the German army in the early years of the second World War. The impending interactions between the

occupiers and the occupied result in expected hostility, but not always in the way one might think.

Suite Française allows the viewer to see the characters in a new, often unexpected light, rather than relying upon stereotypes to avoid melodrama.

Jimmy’s Hall

Does it break your heart, or fill you with hope?

Jimmy's Hall

Jimmy’s Hall

Jimmy’s Hall is a period piece based on the life of activist Jimmy Gralton who, after ten years of exile to New York, returns to his Irish home town in an effort to ‘restart’ his life and care for his sick mother. Having learned a thing or two about American culture while he was away, he decides to re-open a meeting hall which quickly becomes the gathering place for the local youth, and the thorn in the local priest’s side. It’s an intelligent, well-acted movie which emphasizes a good story, strong characters, and even a dollop of Irish humour.109 minutes

What We Did on Our Holiday

 Remember When?

Remember way back in the day what your first assignment was at school? We’ve taken care of it for you this year as Spinning Reels presents What We Did on Our Holiday on September 14, 7:00 PM at the Norwood Theatre.

What We Did on Our Holiday kicks off Spinning Reels' 2015-2016 Season

What We Did on Our Holiday kicks off Spinning Reels’ 2015-2016 Season

Billy Connolly (last seen by Spinning Reels fans in Quartet) stars as Gordie, the birthday boy, who is visited by his ‘happy family’ in order to help him celebrate. As with most families, all is not as it seems, and the mayhem that arises is humorous,  charming and touching. A great way to start off our new season, this is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. As The Guardian said: “It’s impossible not to enjoy this big-hearted and sweet-natured British family movie.”

Join us before the movie at Nick’s 146 Manitoba Street, Bracebridge from 5-6:30 for our Opening Reception. Finger-food will be available as well as a cash bar. Admission by ticket for the movie, or if you want to wait and take a chance, you can buy yours there.

Sample Page

This is an example page. It’s different from a blog post because it will stay in one place and will show up in your site navigation (in most themes). Most people start with an About page that introduces them to potential site visitors. It might say something like this:

Hi there! I’m a bike messenger by day, aspiring actor by night, and this is my website. I live in Los Angeles, have a great dog named Jack, and I like piña coladas. (And gettin’ caught in the rain.)

…or something like this:

The XYZ Doohickey Company was founded in 1971, and has been providing quality doohickeys to the public ever since. Located in Gotham City, XYZ employs over 2,000 people and does all kinds of awesome things for the Gotham community.

A Brilliant Young Mind

You’ll see how for some teens, coming of age just doesn’t add up!

Formerly titled X+Y

Asa Butterfield in A Brilliant Young Mind. For more images, reviews etc. click on the photo

In this touching, yet tough movie we see young Nathan trying to learn to navigate the difficult paths of growing up. Not an unusual topic for a movie, but there’s an additional twist and turn added to A Brilliant Young Mind. Although he suffers as many teenagers do with feeling the angst of the outsider, Nathan (played with great sensitivity and attention to detail by Asa Butterfield) finds comfort, not in rock music, rebellion or illicit drugs, but in the world of numbers.  With the assistance of his (largely ignored) mother and a teacher who is almost as much an outsider, Nathan integrates into his own kind of society and discovers some equations and combinations that aren’t as clear-cut as his usual mathematics.

Director Morgan Matthews avoids the pitfalls of turning this into a syrupy-sweet film through humour and a firm hand that doesn’t sentimentalize. Although its occasionally difficult to like this self-absorbed and emotionally isolated youngster, Nathan’s story is both compelling and entertaining, and helps us to see life through his complex eyes.

Boychoir- May 11, 2015

Your ears (and heart) will soar!

Dustin Hoffman and American Boys' Choir

Dustin Hoffman and American Boys’ Choir

In this coming-of-age story, we find Stet, a gifted but troubled 11-year-old trying to find his way in the world. An audition with a boys’ choir seems to provide him a way to fit in, but he has to learn to deal with the demanding choirmaster (Dustin Hoffman). This could have easily become a sickly sweet ‘movie-of-the-week’ effort, but in this study of human spirit, director François Girard (Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould, The Red Violin) helps us to see how important music can be, if we only take the time to listen.
