Spinning Reels makes $2, 000 donation to the Food Bank

As a result of the unparallelled support of the Spinning Reels community through its attendance over the past eight months, on behalf of those movie-goers, Spinning Reels made a donation of $2,000 to the Manna Food Bank in time for the Christmas “rush”.

“We choose this time, because it is a time, of all others, when Want is keenly felt, and Abundance rejoices.”

Love is Strange

What says holiday season more than a film which is a thoughtful, heartbreaking, and beautifully realized ode to love, family, and both the struggles and rewards of age?

Please join us on Monday, December 8th as Spinning Reels presents Love is Strange. This modern-day love story is about a long-time couple who, just like most of us, face unexpected changes in their lives, but shortly after they finally marry. The movie is peppered with wonderfully-acted characters, none more so than Tony Award winning John Lithgow (Third Rock from the Sun, Terms of Endearment), Alfred Molina Chocolat, An Education) and Oscar-winner Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny, The Wrestler). As the challenges mount, the effects on them and their friends and relatives play out on the large screen presenting us with a beautiful, emotional view of life.

Finding Vivian Maier-November 24, 2014

Hiding in plain sight?

Vivian Maier, was a career nanny who has earned a posthumous reputation as one of America’s most accomplished and insightful street photographers with an uncanny ability to get close to people from all walks of life.

Finding Vivian Maier

Finding Vivian Maier

When she died in 2009 at age eighty-three, she left behind more than 100,000 negatives—images that she’d scarcely shared with anyone. She had spent most of her adult life as a child-care worker with no close ties. Her photographs and belongings were hidden in storage, until they were auctioned them off, and might have vanished into obscurity were it not for the intervention of John Maloof, a twenty-six year- old amateur historian who purchased a box of Maier’s unidentified photographs and became obsessed by what he discovered.

Finding Vivian Maier is an effort to uncover this mystery. Following clues, it trace s Maier’s history through New York City, France, and Chicago, yet as we meet people who knew Vivian, new questions arise about her life and work. Regardless, it’s a wonder to behold the world through Vivian Maier’s eyes. This initially playful, ultimately haunting look at the once-secret career of street photographer Vivian Maier is an aptly obsessive study of obsession. Ida- November 10, 2014

Does the past truly inform our present?

Ida

Agata Trzebuchowska as Ida. Click on photo for IMDB page

We’ll examine that question and many others with our next film Ida on Monday, November 10.

A film Roger Ebert says is “Riveting, original and breathtakingly accomplished on every level…a masterpiece in any era, in any country”, Ida is the story of a young convent-raised girl who, having decided to become a nun, is directed by her Mother Superior to meet with her only known relative, an aunt. This journey of self-discovery takes place in 1960’s Poland and takes us into the countryside to uncover secrets both of Ida and her country’s past. Ida has been universally acclaimed by critics as a movie which is beautifully shot, acted, and at turns tender and bleak, funny and sad.

Tracks 2013 Mia Wasikowska, Adam Driver

Tracks starring Mia Wasikowska

In an acting tour-de-force, Mia Wasikowska (Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, Albert Nobbs) portrays twenty-seven-year-old Robyn Davidson who crossed the desert of Australia in a journey of self-discovery. This 2,700 kilometer ‘walk’ from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean requires to to spend two years preparing.

Accompanied by her dog and four camels, this epic trip- the ultimate road movie, without a road- Tracks captures two extremely challenging journeys, one external, the other internal.

Forced by economic necessity to interact with a National Geographic photographer (Adam Driver), she comes to realize why she longs for the freedom that the journey offers her, and us.

Calvary: a moving, darkly humorous examination of life

Brendan Gleeson stars in Calvary

Brendan Gleeson stars in Calvary

Calvary is a well written, darkly funny and powerfully moving mystery set in an Irish coastal village. The local priest, played by Brendan Gleeson (The Grand Seduction, Brave Heart) is threatened during confession, and though he apparently knows the identity of his would-be murderer, he is more concerned about the struggling souls around him than of his own fate. As a result, he calmly goes about his weekly rounds in his quiet village where all is not, it turns out, as it seems. Part mystery, part mystery-of-life, the week of encounters helps him and us clarify some basic understandings of life, relationships, and faith.

Ahh, September with its warm days, cool nights, kids back at school- there’s a kind of magic in the air- especially as Spinning Reels presents Magic in the Moonlight on September 8, 7:00 PM at the Norwood Theatre.

Colin Firth (The Railway Man, The King’s Speech) and Emma Stone (The Amazing Spiderman, The Help) bring to life 1920’s Europe in all its comedic and visual glory. Magician Firth sets out to debunk the clairvoyant Stone  which results in a conjuring of a whole different nature. Belle September 22, 2014

Can we learn from what happened so long ago?

Gugu Mbatha-Raw as BELLE

Belle is a movie based on actual events and far more than a period piece of manners and costumes. It examines the issue of a free black woman in the heavily striated British society of the late 18th/early 19th centuries.

This is the story of an illegitimate mulatto child magnificently acted by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who is raised in affluence with an excellent education and, à la Jane Austen, once she’s an adult, provided with interesting marriage prospects. Coincidently, her uncle (Tom Wilkinson) is a judge who is hearing a case based upon the question of whether slaves are humans or things, a recurring backdrop of freedom and restriction.

This movie is far more than a costume drama as it is both intelligently written and well-acted, with the result a beautiful cinematic experience which is both intellectually and emotionally stimulating.
