Spinning Reels is a volunteer-run non-profit organization that brings quality alternative movies to Bracebridge, on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month, most months from September to May. (Be sure to check our Schedule before setting out.)
The group was founded in 2002 by Elinor and Ted Phillips, who rose to the challenge after someone told them that Bracebridge was too small a community to support a Film Circuit group like Reel Alternatives in Huntsville (ON).
The group was an instant success. Spinning Reels has never lost money on the year. Being a non-profit organization, we make significant donations to the community, which you can read about on our Donations & Student Bursary page.
Elinor & Ted moved to Kingston in 2005, where they enjoy being closer to their family and continue to see lots of movies.
Spinning Reels has brought more than 100 movies to Bracebridge that would not otherwise have come here. They include Winged Migration, Whale Rider, Being Julia, Les Invasions Barbares, Ladies in Lavender, Water, An Inconvenient Truth, Manufactured Landscapes, Shake Hands with the Devil, La Vie en Rose, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Amal and Young@Heart. The frequency went from one to two films per month in 2007. Check out our Movie Archive page for the full list going back to 2011.
